Seasonal Tips

Spring is a bit of a mixed blessing for dog owners.

The warmer weather means the
dogs get longer, more frequent walks, but it also means mud, rotting vegetation, and various other slimey things dogs love to investigate. It can also be a problematic time for non-sterilized dogs.

A dog in heat will have hormones insisting she go out and attract a mate, and a male (especially a non-sterilized male) will do what is possible to get to her. A dog that wants to mate will find a way over, under, or through a fence. To add to the stress of the situation, the law says a dog in heat must be kept indoors at all times until the end of her heat (about 3 weeks, twice a year). She may be allowed outside for brief periods to “do her business” but must be supervised and brought inside right away. Each violation will cost $50.00.

With dogs being outside more often and for longer periods, dogs in heat are at a greater risk of being bred unintentionally. No one intentionally adds to the numbers of unwanted animals that are euthanized each year, but that is the result when people put off spaying and neutering.

Dogs and the Law

Stop the bark and save a buck. If your dog is making any noise that is disturbing others between 10 pm and 7 am, then you could face a $50 fine from the City. If your dog barks (or howls) excessively at any time of the day, you could face a $50 fine. (Noise Abatement Bylaw #6980)
